The Columbus Day Parade has gone to the dogs!
Well, art shaped like dogs. Whatever. It’s a good cause. Stay with me here.
This Monday, the artwork of celebrities – many with a connection to the Lower Hudson Valley – will be paraded down the streets of New York City as part of an initiative to raise money for a Brewster charity.
About 30 celebs painted life-sized fiberglass dogs that will be aboard a float in the city’s Columbus Day Parade. Among the artistic celebs with a local connection are Pound Ridge residents Richard Gere (pictured) and Clive Davis; Bedford residents Chevy Chase, Glenn Close, Robert Kennedy Jr., Paul Shaffer and Martha Stewart; Chappaqua resident Vanessa Williams; North Salem resident and John Jay High School alumnus Stanley Tucci; and former Putnam County resident Judge Judy Sheindlin.
The money raised through a subsequent auction will benefit Green Chimneys, a 60-year-old non-profit organization that operates a special education school, a residential treatment center for children and a farm and wildlife rehabilitation center in Brewster. The auction ends Nov. 1.
For the rest of October, the dogs will be on display at the TimeWarner Center in Columbus Circle.
Among the other celebrities to apply their palates to fake pups were Fiona Apple, Rachael Ray, Robin Quivers, Dan Aykroyd, Jane Goodall, Cyndi Lauper, Soledad O’Brien, Joe Piscopo, Mike Richter and Bill Walton.

“American Idol†finalist Kimberley Locke helped organize a fundraiser that will be held this Saturday at Caramoor in Katonah to benefit the charity Camp Heartland. Which star of “Whose Line is it Anyway?†is scheduled to host?
A. Wayne Brady
B. Drew Carey
C. Colin Mochrie
D. Ryan Stiles
Music producer icon Clive Davis of Pound Ridge helped Billy Joel, Mayor Mike Bloomberg and others hold a press conference yesterday to announce the November opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex in SoHo.
A photographer at the event snapped this Davis photo, which either has no depth perception or showcases a Paul Bunyan-sized guitar. I’m going to pretend the latter, because it looks like that six-string is preparing to take the podium to deliver a speech and/or bust out some “Freebird.”
Another equally curious photo from yesterday’s press conference is one with Davis and Bloomberg offering a two-gun salute. And while I don’t necessarily agree with BestWeekEver.tv’s Dan Hopper that it’s “scientifically the most non-rocking thing that exists,” I’m not going to pretend I didn’t laugh at that assessment.

At the end of the video and after the break is the answer to this week’s quiz: A Cincinnati councilman recently apologized to Rip Torn for falsely using his barely obscured mug shot in a campaign ad railing against “child predators.” In what Westchester municipality was Torn arrested for driving while under the influence?
B. North Salem
OK, it’s been a week since this bizarre story broke, but it warrants a review, Suburbarazzi-style:
In Cincinnati last week, City Councilman Chris Monzel apologized publicly to Rip Torn for manipulating the actor’s mug shot — taken in 2006 after Torn was arrested for drunk driving in North Salem — for a campaign ad.
Suburbarazzi posted an alternate mug shot and appeared to join The Journal News in scooping the story about Torn’s arrest on Dec. 4, 2006. On April 16, 2007, he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired, paid a $380 fine and surrendered his license for 90 days. And, at the time, that appeared to be the end of the story.
Facing actual drunk-driving charges is bad enough, but having your barely obscured face incorrectly associated with sexual predators is no better.
Monzel’s campaign was taken enough by the photo of the (allegedly) ripped Torn to use it in a TV ad decrying sexual predators, obscuring just the eyes of the picture with a black bar.
I’ll let the Associated Press take over from here:
Monzel said the ad was meant to depict a generic criminal and discuss his efforts to ‘get sexual predators off the streets.’ He said the ad wasn’t meant to have anything to do with the 77-year-old actor.
However, someone was able to identify Torn, and the actor was notified, Monzel said. Monzel quickly pulled the ad from local TV and cable stations.
Torn demanded an apology. On (June 10), Monzel placed an ad in The Cincinnati Enquirer describing Torn as an award-winning actor who had served honorably in the Army. The wording was negotiated over months, Monzel said.
‘That’s what this is about,’ he said. ‘And I apologize for it. I want to take full responsibility.’
The Enquirer said efforts to reach Torn were unsuccessful.
I’m not sure if Monzel, who was re-elected, was punished in any way for this massive error in judgment, but I wouldn’t blame Torn if he funded similar commercials for Monzel’s campaign opponent next time around.

As you probably know if you’ve been keeping up with Suburbarazzi, we’ve become huge Kimberly Locke fans ever since interviewing her last month. So I couldn’t resist making another quiz question about the North Salem songbird. To wit:
After the recent episode of “American Idol” in which Locke performed her new single “Fall,” she told TMZ that one of the contestants tried to ask her out on a date. Alas, she declined. Can you guess which AI hopeful got the big diss?
A. David Archuleta
B. Michael Johns
D. Jason Castro
The answers, as always, is at the end of the clip and after the break.
Kimberly Locke takes a pass on Chikezie • 04.10.08
TMZ managed to corner Kimberly Locke, the former American Idol contestant and (in case you didn’t notice the umpteen posts on Suburbarazzi a couple weeks ago) newest celebrity resident of North Salem. After cracking up over the reality of being caught inside the camera crosshairs (“I love TMZ!” she said, after doubling over), Locke told the paps that her favorite contestant this season was Chikezie, who got voted off a couple weeks ago.
Incidentally, that checks out completely with what she told us on March 20, when Idol came to film at her restaurant, Croton Creek Steakhouse, in Croton Falls.
In the interest of “giving it up” to the gossip mongers, though, Locke did offer one tidbit: “Chikezie, he wanted to invite me out on a date.” Apparently that didn’t work out for him any better than covering Luther Vandros’s “If Only for One Night.”

Why would a celebrity choose North Salem as a place to live and open a restaurant? What’s a downside to living with Clay Aiken? And what does it feel like to know you’ll be singing your new song on the “American Idol” stage during this week’s results show?
These questions in an exclusive Suburbarazzi interview with “Idol” contestant Kimberley Locke were the ones to make the cut for tonight’s extra-special segment on RNN. Later this week, we’ll post my uncut interview, including a reference to Kim’s stint on “Celebrity Fit Club.” (Although that version will be uncut, don’t exactly expect a Jerry Springer routine from Kim and me, though. We’re not like that. On camera, anyway.)
EXCLUSIVE: ‘American Idol’ alum Kimberley Locke recruits celebs for charity events in Lower Hudson Valley • 03.24.08
“American Idol” alum Kimberley Locke is wasting no time getting herself acclimated to New York City’s northern suburbs.
While chatting with Suburbarazzi last week, she revealed that the nicest A-lister in the music industry was the one and only Patti LaBelle. But it seems Locke won’t be on her own when it comes to planning regional charity events.
Not only is she hoping for LaBelle to appear at an upcoming event at Katonah’s Caramoor to raise money for Camp Heartland, but it appears that “Don’t Forget The Lyrics” host and “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” mainstay Wayne Brady will provide hosting duties. Camp Heartland, which Locke said recently purchased the Birch Family Camp in Carmel, caters to children living with AIDS.
We love the charity work, of course, but we also love her dedication to bringing more celebs to the Lower Hudson Valley. It keeps us busy in the best way possible.
Find out how why Locke lists LaBelle as her favorite music industry icon and more about Locke’s charitable works in the following clip:
In case you missed any of the other audio clips of my interview with Locke, here’s what you might have missed on Suburbarazzi and sister blog Remote Access:

EXCLUSIVE: ‘American Idol’ alum Kimberley Locke loves motorbike rides through Lower Hudson Valley • 03.21.08
Don’t let the sweet demeanor of “American Idol” alumna Kimberley Locke lull you into thinking she’s intimidated by a motorcycle. She’s got a small fleet of them, and it’s one of the reasons she was disappointed to see biker-slash-nurse Amanda Overmyer eliminated from “Idol” this week.
In this clip from my interview of Locke yesterday, she reveals her plans to buy a Harley in the near future and love for ridin’ hogs through the Lower Hudson Valley and her native Tennessee:
More clips from Locke will appear here and on Remote Access until my story about her appears Tuesday in the Life & Style section of The Journal News, but I’ve posted a few already.
