Kelly Clarkson rediscovers her Catholic roots in Yonkers

March
17

Yes, Yonkers. According to Journal News religion reporter Gary Stern, the “American Idol” songstress is going to be performing for Pope Benedict XVI when he comes to Yonkers on April 19. clarkson.jpgAlas, Benny won’t get to hear “Since U Been Gone,” “Breakaway,” “Never Again,” or any of her other ditties—the only tune she’ll be belting out, apparently, is “Ave Maria.”

Gary adds that Clarkson is Catholic, and will be also doing a pre-Pope concert at Dunwoodie.  And being the all-seeing-eye of our local Pope coverage, he also says that on the following day, at Yankee Stadium, Harry Connick and Jose Feliciano will give an encore performance.

Ummm..Kelly’s not Catholic, she’s a Christian. You should check your sources. Just because she’s singing for the Pope/charity doesn’t make her catholic.

  2. Erin

Well, a Catholic is a Christian too.

  3. Steve

    Catholics are the OG Christians!

It’s already been said but, the Catholic Church is the Church founded 2,000 years ago by Jesus Christ at Pentecost. Kelly sang for the successor of St. Peter, the papacy having an unbroken line of succession for 2,000 years, as well. So, Protestants are out “separated brethren”, but Catholics are the original Christians.

I agree, nothing sounds so dumb to hear/ read a “Christian” say, “Oh I used to be a Catholic, but now I’m a Christian”.. First of all, this sentiment is deep rooted in the protestant bigotry in this nation, way back when it was ok to discriminate against catholics; now it is cloaked in holier than thou attitude. Catholic – for those who don’t know – basically was a term coined to mean ’(Christian) from all walks of life’, to call out the fact that to be Christian was not just to be greek, but from any place. To call oneself a catholic means to be Christian first above all, and that one is linked to the church established by Christ through Peter and the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

The word “catholic” means “universal”. It is used in the apostles creed recited by some protestant sects as well as the Roman church. As for Roman Catholicism, the theology “claiming to possess exclusively the notes or characteristics of the one, only, true, and universal church having unity, visibility, indefectibility, apostolic succession, universality, and sanctity: used in this sense, with these qualifications, only by the Church of Rome, as applicable only to itself and its adherents and to their faith and organization; often qualified, especially by those not acknowledging these claims, by prefixing the word “Roman”. It seems that this lack of understanding is more prevelant in parts of the country where the RC presence is not as strong as it is where I live in the Northeast. As to those who follow the teachings of christ; we are all Christians. In the Western churches, the basic segmentation are those who are Roman Catholic and those who are not (protestants).

He did check his sources. His SOURCE didn’t check HIS sources.

Kelly grew up Baptist, but how do we know she hasn’t converted or maybe wasn’t Catholic before she was Baptist? Can someone provide me with this evidence….I’ve been searching and searching. It just doesn’t make since to me that she would be asked if she WASN’T Catholic. How often does the Pope come to town? I’m sure there is a Catholic Girl somewhere JUST as capable of singing Ave Maria.
