Phil Rizzuto’s celebrated life included dinners in Eastchester

I was sad to see that one of my favorite all-time New York Yankee personalities, Phil Rizzuto, passed away today. Not only was No. 10 a great player on many of the Yankees’ championship teams and a legendary broadcaster for four decades, but he was a class act—self-effacing, genuine and kind by all accounts.
I did a little homework and learned that the Scooter used to dine at the defunct Alex & Henry’s restaurant on Route 22 in Eastchester. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of his dinners resulted in an on-air shout-out during a crucial moment of a game, one of the few announcers who could do such a thing and have the audience laugh along with him.
Before it closed in 1999, Alex & Henry’s served other celebrity clientèle, including fellow Yankees Joe DiMaggio, Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle; Sneden’s Landing resident Al Pacino; Kathy Lee Gifford and Frank Gifford; and politicians Bob Dole, Jack Kemp, Nelson Rockefeller, Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and Rudolph Giuliani.
Holy Cow, we’re gonna miss you, Phil.
