Stalking Lower Hudson Valley Celebrities … So You Don\’t Have To

The YouTube Version of Kevin Dillon

entourage20_th.jpgEver wondered what Mamaroneck native Kevin Dillon would look like if played by an internet celebrity? Or rather, ever wondered what Dillon’s “Entourage” character—the can’t-get-no-respect Johnny “Drama” Chase—would resort to if he was trying to get an agent’s attention through YouTube?

Meet Shmuel Tennenhaus.

After writing about Tennenhaus’s bizarre website, Paging Ari Gold, this morning, he reached out to Suburbarazzi. Much to my surprise, when I Googled him I saw that this wasn’t even his first bid for online celebrity status. The New York Times published a story in February about another of his recent ventures, Ask a Jew (meant to play off the success of Ask a Ninja, another breakout YouTube star).

While he’s hardly achieved the fame of, say, Numa Numa boy, his Ari Gold site has gotten traffic from dozens of studios and agencies, including Twentieth Century Fox, Disney, Vivendi Universal, United Talent Agency, Endeavor Agency, Wenner Media, and E!

I spoke with Tennenhaus this afternoon to figure out whether he’s (a) the biggest “Entourage” fan EVER, (b) seriously in need of help, or (c ) an oddly savvy viral marketer. Turns out, all three.

When did you start the Paging Ari Gold site?

About a month ago. It was linked to on Defamer. AdRants also wrote something, saying it was clearly some ploy by HBO. Then of course HBO flat-out denied that.

Has it gotten a lot of traffic?

It got a lot of hits when it got picked up by Defamer and some other industry sites. The first Ari Gold clip has been seen about 5,000 times on YouTube.

Rex Lee, who plays Lloyd on the show, also left a comment on the site, which was pretty cool.

sponsoredlink.jpgI also bought keyword searches for “Ari Goldâ€? and some of the show’s writers. If you search for Ari Gold and Entourage, you’ll see my ad on Google. That’s paid search, and I think that’s why some people assumed this was an HBO viral campaign.

More after the break …

entourage11_th.jpgYou want to be represented by Ari Gold and his agency, Miller Gold. You do realize he’s a fictional character on Entourage, right?

Yeah, no kidding. What’s great about Entourage is how they cleverly mix reality and fiction. I basically one-upped them by asking Ari Gold to be my agent.

I have 90 videos on YouTube so far. My intention is to write myself into the show. By the end of the third season, remember, Ari Gold gets fired by Vinny Chase. Now, that’s the fiction. But in the real world, Internet stars are getting bigger and bigger. So the way I see it, the writers don’t even need work all that hard to write me into the show. They have a natural segue. If in the next season Ari represents somebody who’s become famous on the internet, I’m the guy.

Do you see yourself as being in the same boat as Kevin Dillon’s character?

I’m worse. I’m not even his fake brother. That’s why I have to do what I’m doing to get Ari’s attention.

Why not seek out Turtle as your manager?

The first clip was directed just to Ari. Then the second clip was directed to Lloyd. I think it’ll be easier to get to Lloyd to rep me than Turtle. I’m not sure I would trust Turtle as my manager—remember what happened with Saigon. That’s why I pitched myself to Lloyd.

Are you an actor or just aspiring to be the next Internet star, like LonelyGirl15 or the Numa Numa kid?

In all honesty, there’s no real substance to anything on the web. There’s no connection between online and off-line celebrity. To become an internet celebrity, you need cleavage.

In one of your video clips, you stated that you’re not into Mandy Moore. Why on earth not?

She wouldn’t give me the time of day. I’d probably get a restraining order.
