Stalking Lower Hudson Valley Celebrities … So You Don\’t Have To

En route to elusive Pro-Am victory, Bill Murray charges for charity

March
12

It’s no secret I’m a huge Bill Murray fan. So today, when I read a Feb. 20 Sports Illustrated article that stated that the Sneden’s Landing resident charged fans $50 per autograph at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am, I didn’t know what to think.

But in the next sentence, I learned Murray took all that cash—$900 in total—and handed it to the founder of the Blooming Place for Kids charity. Then I was pleased… I think.

Here’s why I’m not sure: Did Murray tell autograph seekers where the money was going? If not, did he plan this donation all along, or was it a spur-of-the-moment decision to hand over the cash at the last minute? Worse still, what if more than 18 people paid for autographs?

I’ll tell myself that he told autograph seekers where the money was going and that he handed over the full amount. What do you think?

PS—Murray and his golfing partner won the tournament, which reminds me of a fantastic “Ghostbusters” quote: “We came, we saw, we kicked its… !”

UPDATE! Here’s a WTCP quote from Murray, complaining about professional autograph seekers (ah, there IS a difference) and stating that he gave the seekers a heads-up:

These guys are just pushing in your face with these giant pictures of Carl Spackler. So, I came up with a schtick. I said, okay, I’ll sign for 50 bucks, and we’ll give it to charity. They looked at each other, then came up with the money. I got around 800 bucks. So, we’re headed to an outlet mall and buy some clothes.

Outlet mall be darned, he opted to donate it to the charity instead.
