Exclusive! Isaac Mizrahi on car crash: ‘I thought we were finished’

Forgive me; I hadn’t known why fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi was clinging to a walker to amble around the Lord & Taylor branch in Eastchester. After sitting in a large green chair in a makeshift green room of Lord & Taylor’s third-floor executive offices, some of the staff commended him for his recovery — but no one actually mentioned what happened. I decided to wait until toward the end of my one-on-one interview to ask about it, in case it was a sensitive subject.

It turns out that 10 days before he showed off his fall collection at a Feb. 5 Fashion Week show, Mizrahi was in a car accident in the Hamptons and fractured his pelvis. In a picture accompanying a New York Post story, I was shocked to see the image of him in a wheelchair and, evidently, so was the Fashion Week audience.

From what I could gather from research after the interview, Mizrahi’s been relatively quiet about the accident in the weeks that followed. So his detailed account of the accident appears to be an exclusive for Suburbarazzi:

It was really horrible. I keep reliving the moment. It was just bad. I was driving. I was in the car with my friend Arnold and my dog, and we were driving. And it was, like, this road that was not a giant highway, but it was a highway, and there were, like, intersections. And there was a stop light. I’m used to it being a flashing yellow light, so I thought I had the right-of-way. … It was like slow motion, sort of … except I was going at, you know, 70 (mph) and she was going at 65 (mph), and I was watching like, “She’s going to stop, right?â€? And she didn’t stop. She just hit my like right there, in my door. (There is) the moment where you know you think, how am I going to stop this car? I can’t see anything because of the airbags and the soot and all that dust and glass everywhere. The dog is freaking out. Arnold’s freaking out. It was really scary and I thought we were finished. I really did, because I didn’t know where were going. I thought we would just go into something else at 70 mph. Somebody was going into us as we were spinning out of control. It was really chaotic and nutty.

After I told him I was glad he was OK, he replied:

Me too. And I’m glad you made me relive that.

His entourage and the Lord & Taylor staff in the room laughed. I think he was half-joking.

After the 10-minute interview, during which Mizrahi showcased his quick wit, he signed autographs and gift sets of StriVectin — the anti-wrinkle cream he endorses — for those he met on the second floor. In a four-part series this week, I’ll post a segment of my exclusive interview daily on Suburbarazzi. On Friday, I’ll post the entire transcript for your perusal.

Want a teaser of what to expect? Find out after the break.

Lots of good stuff, of course.

•When was the last time Mizrahi was in LoHud territory?
•Why wasn’t he on the red carpet for Sunday’s Oscar ceremony?
•Who were his favorite Hollywood fashion successes and disasters?
•Although he appeared on both, did he prefer “Sex And The City” or “Ugly Betty” as a show?
•What did he think of my fashion sense?
•Of Rosie O’Donnell, Joan Rivers and Ryan Seacrest, about whom did he “take the fifth”?
•Did he plan to give any of the Lord & Taylor visitors the Johansson Treatment?
