Rosie vs. American Idol

Yes, some people might be tempted—after Rosie’s latest outburst on The View against the American Idol judges—to say, there she goes again, chasing another celebrity feud (Donald Trump certainly was, quickly coming to the defense of his “friend Simon Cowell). I was tempted at first also. Except for the fact that I agree with her 100%. There is a weird fascination America has with public shaming (it’s like the 21st century equivalent of watching a hanging in the public square). And Rosie’s right—a lot of these people are not completely there mentally. Is it really necessary to embarrass them in front of millions? Not to mention the fact that quite a few of them are teenagers. Who hasn’t had delusions of talent when they were 16?And there is something unnerving about watching “four millionaires (Rosie included Jewel, who sat in on the season premiere) laughing at these people.

You can call me Rosie’s “sister-friend, but I’m totally with her on this one. And I too have often wondered what exactly is in Paula Abdul’s cup of coke.

“Paula was very thirsty last night, did anyone else notice?” Rosie said yesterday on The View. “Every shot, that woman was sipping the Coca-Cola in her cup,” she said, with a wink. “Towards the end of the show, one eye was wandering.”

contrived waste of time for ratings.

I agree with MS. O’DOnnell. The cruelty involved here is not the judges alone. These people should have been eliminated earlier. The fact that they were exposed to ridicule on national TV is tantamount to trotting out mental patients for public amusement in the old days. It is beyond cruel and Fox should be ashamed to do this. It was very sad. What have we become in this country to make fun of people like this?

First of all, these contestants parents and friends should have never told them they could sing, because guess what? THEY CAN’T SING!! Oh, so let’s send them to a singing contest that is watched by 32 million people. Brilliant!! Then we can all shed a tear when Simon finally tells them the truth. It’s about time somebody stopped lying to them. Is it entertaining? You bet. Do I feel sorry for these freaks? Not really. They chose to stick their necks out to millions of viewers. Nobody forced them to do it. They watched the show. They know about Simon and Randy. So America: Get over it! If you don’t want to be humiliated, don’t audition.

Rod, I absolutely agree – they knew what they were getting into, but if they thought they were really good, there would also be a hefty dose of “It won’t happen to me” on their minds. Even my 14 year old son had enough last night (the Seattle audition show). He said he felt really badly for the contestants because they were singing and the judges were just up there laughing at them – he said the whole thing came off as really mean.

I’ve apparently raised him with some compassion, for which I’m happy. But when even a 14 year old can recognize that something’s over the line, where are the brains of these producers/judges/ etc? I guess if the money’s right, compassion goes right out the window.

I think Rosie needs to shut the hell up already. She has a point about idol and paula did look a bit drunk too me as well. Rosie needs to give it a rest for a while. I think if she keeps going on talking about others the way she does a lot of people and her fans will start to dislike her. Rosie it’s too much alreday!

  6. Jana Webb

I quit watching the view, due to way that Rosie consistently talks about people. Her saying anything negative about American Idol is equivalent to Rosie talking out of each side of her mouth. This is the 6th season, and these contestants have got to have an inkling of what they are facing, especially standing in front of Simon. Simon’s reputation is well-known. If Rosie doesn’t like it, then simply don’t watch it.

I only wish to comment on the fact that the way the judgement is carried out is unprofessional.

This barrage of cockyness and volley of smart quips – especially from Simon C. So uncalled for and why I ask?? He no doubt his place in the Industry and has gaind Galaxies of publicity from the last seasons. Boastful and prideful in his delivery he is!!

You have 37 and odd million fans watching this drama of CONTROL unfolding on the tele for the Premiere of the season…... how horryfying.

I find that offensive. My kids were not there but those young kids were my kids and no doubt a standard has to be maintained – the disqualification of a candidate or the uniqueness of a participants presentation is no excuse to mock and make merry at the cost of the candidates.

Yes – adrenalin is good and competitons require mercenary participation – but this is not BOOT CAMP!
You’d rather brand the unseccessful ones as Al Qaeda and pack them off to Guantanamo!!

Thank you ‘America Idol’ – for feeding us this crao!

It pains me to see the day when folks aren’t held responsible for their own actions. I doubt Simon, Randy or Paula held a gun to anyone’s head to appear on the show. Most clearly know the show and many appear to be on there knowing they aren’t really good, but hoping to have their own “William Hung moment.” As one of the folks from last nights show just said on The Insider, its a two way street. If you are gonna waste the judges time by acting a fool on TV, then you deserve the ridicule. And I have no sympathy for adults who choose to go on a show were they know the deal, nor do I have sympathy for those who allow their 16, 17 year olds to audition knowing their chances. And I am so tired of Rosie. I really have no comment for her anymore. Its why I no longer watch the View

I don’t know who is more disgusting.

Who chose to single out the retarded and mongoloid contestants for a second round of humiliation? The show’s producers must be some truly sick people, blinded with greed.

Or is it the audience that wants to see retarded and mongoloid children being humiliated?

There are way too many sick people in America.

  10. Adam D

I agree completely with this article. Whether or not these people know Simons (bad) reputation does not leave open the argument that these people should be expecting ridicule, especially based on physical appearance. The questionable mental state of some of the more delusional contestants must be taken into account as well. Also, there were hundreds of contestestants auditioning in Seattle and the producers CHOSE to show the people who appeared on the show on their own accord. They could have just as easily taken the high road and not further embarrass these people. The things that were said by the pompous judges about the contestants (lack of) talent and lack of what our sick society would consider “good looks” is bad enough, but for the producers to then air this attack on national T.V, knowing that this would cause further hurt and ridicule to the contestant, well that is clearly a lack of compassion and sympathy for the feelings of person. Anyone who condones this and continues to put advertising dollars in the pockets of these people, are no better than the schoolyard bullies that attack their victim with words and embarrassment and then magnify that to further their own ego and sense of power, that the judges on this sorry excuse for entertainment portray. Good night and Good luck.

Has everyone forgotten these contestants are assessed for their talent before going on American Idol. I personally hate the show for more than the so called judges. I hate the music. These talantless contestants should have been out of the running before they made it to the television. No one should be humiliated like that. There is are exceptions such as Sadam Husein. I don’t care if I spelled that incorrectly but the point is there are those who deserve it and those who do not. It does not matter that these people signed a waiver. They must truly believe that they have a gift. It saddened me to watch a 19 year old girl who was obviously nervous to be completely devastated. She said nothing which in my opinion shows dignity. The so called judges and whats his name that talks to them after wards were being idiots. Those are professionals? It pains me to think that people like that are in the majority. By the way. I am not a fan of Rosie or Trump. I just happen to agree with her and I have had this “view” since the first season. That’s my opinion for what it is worth. Thank you for listening.
